Current policy guide and checks
A nearby school is a consideration, not an admission promise
Schools often come up during viewings. In the MOE Primary 1 registration framework, home-to-school distance can affect priority, but citizenship, the registration phase and available places also matter. The Primary 1 process for international students differs from that for Singapore citizens and permanent residents.
Use a genuine address and the official tool for the year
MOE explains that Primary 1 registration generally uses the official residential address reflected on the parents’ NRICs. Where a child obtains priority admission based on home-to-school distance, a 30-month residence requirement at the same address applies. New or resale properties, and caregiving address arrangements, have their own conditions; read the guidance for the particular situation.
For your child’s registration year, use OneMap School Query to check the address and distance. New buildings, property changes or school-boundary changes can affect results. An old advertisement, walking time or a general claim about a whole condominium is not enough.
My neighbourhood checklist goes beyond distance
- The real school run: walk from the actual block and entrance, checking crossings, shelter and peak-hour conditions.
- Family responsibilities: who takes the child to school and who goes to work? Consider both routes.
- Length of stay: does the tenancy or purchase plan fit the expected period of residence, beyond one registration exercise?
- Other options: understand alternative schools and possible admissions routes early.
References to “nearby schools” in my property journal provide neighbourhood context. Distances and eligibility for a specific home must be checked separately.

Neighbourhood choice and changing school labels
The earlier area note discussed Bukit Timah, the East Coast and Clementi. Use these as starting points for commuting and household needs, checking school locations, rankings and distance boundaries separately.
MOE announced in 2026 that school-based support would expand from 2027, with advanced modules at 15 designated centres for suitable students. Older GEP-school labels do not replace the current arrangements or Primary 1 registration checks. MOE: support arrangements announced in 2026.
