Major change to Singapore accompanying-parent applications: fathers and grandfathers

English translation of the original post

Before 26 June, only a child's mother, grandmother or maternal grandmother could apply for an accompanying-parent pass. Fathers and grandfathers could not apply. From 26 June, the updated immigration application system showed that mothers and grandmothers were no longer the only eligible applicants: fathers and grandfathers could also apply! For a child studying in Singapore who is under 16, a parent can apply for an accompanying-parent pass. While holding the pass, the accompanying parent can enter and leave Singapore without applying separately for a tourist visa.

Who may apply for a parent or grandparent LTVP?

Under the ICA guidance reviewed for this article, a father, mother, grandfather or grandmother of a child studying in Singapore on a Student’s Pass may apply for a Long-Term Visit Pass (LTVP), subject to the applicable conditions. Only one parent or grandparent per student may apply under this arrangement. It does not give an entire family automatic long-term residence.

An application also requires a local sponsor who is a Singapore citizen or permanent resident aged at least 21. Eligibility to apply does not guarantee approval; ICA decides the outcome.

My suggestion: align three timelines

  1. The student: school confirmation, admission arrangements and Student’s Pass progress.
  2. The accompanying adult: application documents, intended entry arrangements and a workable plan while awaiting the decision.
  3. The home: viewing dates, the tenancy start, deposit and contractual arrangements if the pass does not arrive as planned.

These timelines affect one another. Do not skip checks on status and timing because a property seems ideal, or commit to an unsuitable long tenancy around an unconfirmed travel date.

Choose an area by imagining an ordinary weekday

Connect the school run, shopping, healthcare and everyday travel into a realistic route. Look beyond the bedroom count to cooking, laundry and the practical experience of living with a child.

Prepare before looking: household size, school location, acceptable one-way commute, monthly housing budget and your earliest move-in date. You do not need to send passports or a child’s complete identity documents for an initial conversation.
